Seven-Subject Pre-Deployment Training Standard

Before any Pilum officer is assigned to a Colorado school campus, they complete a structured pre-deployment training program covering seven subject areas. This program is delivered in-house by Pilum Tactical's veteran instructor team — not through a third-party annual recertification vendor.

Orientation & Legal Standards

Company policies, post orders, legal authority of security personnel vs. sworn law enforcement, civil liability, negligence standards, use-of-force continuum, and OSHA compliance.

Firearms & Tactical Proficiency

Draw-stroke mechanics, live-fire marksmanship fundamentals, combat reloads, malfunction clearing, Level 2/3 retention holster operation, POST-equivalent qualification shoot, close-quarters response, and solo-officer engagement protocols.

De-Escalation, Communication & School Environment

Use-of-force structured model, verbal intervention techniques, situational awareness in school settings, professional interaction with students and staff, trauma-informed communication, and law enforcement coordination protocols.

Emergency Response & Safety Protocols

Standard Response Protocols (HOLD, SECURE, LOCKDOWN, EVACUATE, SHELTER), active threat response and building clearing, law enforcement coordination during incidents, and TCCC/CPR/tourniquet application — Red Cross-certified instructor delivery.

Defensive Tactics & Control Measures

OC spray deployment, Taser operation, handcuffing and compliant control procedures, physical intervention as last resort with proportionality and documentation requirements.
Scenario-Based & Advanced Training

Scenario-Based & Advanced Training

Force-on-force exercises in realistic school-environment scenarios, simulator-based judgmental shooting (FATS or equivalent), tabletop exercises with Operations Manager, and joint training with local law enforcement — minimum twice annually.

FAQs

What training do Pilum school security officers complete before working on a campus?

Pilum school security officers complete a seven-subject pre-deployment training program covering legal authority, POST-equivalent firearms qualification, de-escalation in school environments, emergency response protocols (including SRP — HOLD, SECURE, LOCKDOWN, EVACUATE, SHELTER), defensive tactics, force-on-force scenario exercises, and district-specific operational procedures. Training is delivered in-house by Pilum Tactical's veteran instructor team — not outsourced to a third-party certification vendor.

How does Pilum's K-9 program work on school campuses?

Pilum deploys K-9 units trained in vapor wake firearm and contraband detection. Sweeps are conducted on randomized, unpredictable schedules across all covered campuses — providing both detection capability and a continuous psychological deterrent. K-9 units are particularly effective in high-traffic schools with multiple entry points.

How many schools does Pilum currently protect in Colorado?

Pilum is currently providing armed security across 18+ public schools spanning three cities and three counties in Colorado's 27J School District, protecting over 18,000 students daily. Zero active shooter incidents have occurred across all covered campuses since program inception.

Does Pilum provide active shooter training for school staff, not just officers?

Yes. Pilum delivers active shooter and emergency response training for educators, administrators, and campus security personnel — not just the officers on post. Training covers SRP protocols, evacuation procedures, lockdown response, communication chains with law enforcement, and Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) first aid. On-site training is available for organizations throughout Colorado.
